For me there really is nothing better then a good
book.  When I was a little girl I used to "borrow" the
family flashlight and read under my covers.  Books
were my escape and my saving grace.

I still LOVE books. Finding them, reading them, buying
them, keeping them on my shelves - my books are my
friends.

Here are some of my favorites (it will be a LONG LIST)
if one or more sounds good to you just click on the
link - you will be brought right to amazon - you can
get "gently used" books for a good price.  Just make
sure that the seller has good feedback and that the
book is in great or like new condition.  I have bought a
number of hardcovers from Amazon and have been
happy - I love the way they look on my shelves and I
save a few bucks.

The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Literary Society
This is one of the best books I have ever read.  I felt as if I were
sitting in an overstuffed chair on a rainy day, drinking hot chocolate
with an occasional lightening strike thrown in for good measure.  It
was amazing.  You can purchase it on amazon - get a used copy just
make sure that the seller indicates that it is in good or very good

A Fantastic Read
Shantaram

This is another BEST BOOK.  It is an EPIC.
Based on the life of the author it will
transport you to India and it's underworld.
The writing is beautiful and it is a story about
redemption and resurrection.  I have and I
have not met a person who did not love it.

EPIC

VINCE FLYNN

This guy is GREAT.  I read all nine books in less then three months.  I
would have to go and buy the next one in the series before I was half way
finished with the current one as I did not want any GAPS!!  He has a new
one coming out in October.  In my opinion it is better to read the books
in order.

A Prayer for Owen Meany

I am not a re-reader.  There are too many books and too
little time but with that said this book is a classic and I
have read it twice.  There are parts that are so funny that
I actually snorted out loud.  John Irving is a marvelous
writer and while I have like almost all of his book - Owen
Meany is on the TOP OF ALL OF MY LISTS

TREAT YOURSELF - This is a CLASSIC
Daniel Silva
The Kill Artist

Another AMAZING author - I have read
every book he has written and his Gabriel
the things I like best about this guy is that
his fiction is based on facts and he tells
you the facts at the end and while the
books may make you rethink some of your
positions on the middle east they will make
you very happy that you found Mr. Silva
and Mr. Allon.  The first in the series is
"The Kill Artist"

You will not be disappointed
Harry Potter 1-7

There are no real words.  This is an amazing series.
All about redemption, bravery, friendship.
Everything you could want in an adventure.  I was at
the store at midnight for the release of the last
three books.  As a forty year old woman I was VERY
ACTIVE in the on-line chat rooms.  My brother
mocked me referring to me as a 14 year old trapped
with the body of a middle aged woman - DID NOT
CARE - Have REREAD THIS BOOKS OVER AND OVER
I want to go to HOGWARTS
Mistress of the Art of Death - First in a series.
Wonderful - takes place in the 11th century -
the romance between the characters is as
close to perfect as it gets.  I loved this book
so much I wrote the author AND she wrote
back.  I have given this book as a gift many
times
This book is DELICIOUS
The Serpents Tale - number two in
the Mistress of the Art of Death Series
The Serpents Tale
The third in the series is Grave Goods.
I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS
Grave Goods
David Sedaris
This guy may just be the funniest writer on the planet.
Every single time I read Holiday's on Ice I snort - it does
not matter where I am private/public he is hysterical.
Reading about working at a large department store while
on drugs should not be this funny but it is - anyone who
comes from crazy needs to read him.
Holiday's on Ice
The Kindle - if you love books
you just might love the Kindle -
my only words advice do not
go crazy downloading - it is
possible - try and control
yourself and allow yourself
only ten books at a time :)
The Kindle
The Shadow of the Wind - this
book is simply marvelous.
When you think it is turning
right it turns left.  I can usually
tell where a book is going but
this one kept surprising me - I
was sorry when it ended
The Shadow of the Wind

The Angel's Game
ANNE LAMONT
Anything non-fiction she writes - she will make
you feel better about your life and will also make
God a little more understandable - she is VERY
LIBERAL - but you gotta love her anyway - you
can order it right on amazon there is a link on
this page - remember buy used good or
excellent condition - save a few bucks and
recycle.
If you are at all interested in the Mormon Church and it's
history here are two recommendations.

Under the Banner of Heaven - it is AMAZING and if you
like Big Love you will love this book - gives so much insight
into the history and the beliefs and the how it all works.

The 19th Wife:    New York Time Bestseller - once again
gives you history and intertwines a recent story - relevant
bases on the raid in Texas.

Only Religion Born in America and it is growing
Marion Keyes - anything she writes
- including her non-fiction - her
fiction is chick lit for women over
the age of 30 - as an FYI she has
some great "romantic" scenes and
the characters repeat throughout
the books - the mother is a riot and
the humor is very dry.
SUSAN CARROLL - she has a dark queen trilogy -
three sisters and they each have a story - fun reading
all our good the second one is the best - bosom
heaving romance - escape, escape, escape -
remember you can order it right at the amazon site on
this page and once again - nothing wrong with buying
used - and as an FYI you can get free shipping on all
of your purchases for a year for eighty bucks and in
fact I think you can use up to four email accounts so
find some friends and pay 20 bucks each - its a
bargain
RUTH DOWNIE - she writes about
the end of the Roman Empire -
he is a great character first one if
the series is Medicus.  Part of
what is really interesting is
reading about the medicine used
so many centuries ago - also Tilla
is fun
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer is one of the
best books that I have read in the past year.  The book was really written by Annie Barrow and Mary Ann
Shaffer.  The book was really written by Mary Ann Shaffer who died before it was ready to be published so it
was finished by her niece Annie Barrows.  The partnership resulted in near perfection.
Reading is one of my passions and as a child is was my saving grace.  My perfect day will always include a
visit to a bookstore with time to wander the aisle, touching the books, pulling out ones that look interesting,
looking at covers, reading the front slip, perusing the reviews and then carrying all of my choices over to a
comfortable chair where I can sit and drink tea and decide which books will be coming home with me and
become my friends.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society became one of my best friends very quickly.  As I do
have a slight addiction to bookstores I picked this book up before most people.  It was located in the new
fiction section and I was immediately drawn to the cover.  I loved the colors and the font.  It spoke of a
simpler time and evoked a sense of romance.  I also loved the texture of the cover is was not slick but a
little grainy leading to the feeling that when one was reading and holding the book one would be transported
back in time.  When I read the book jacket I knew that I was buying the book.  It is a story of a woman who
travels to the Guernsey Island off the Coast of England right after World War II and what she finds.  These
islands were occupied by the Germans during the war and the residents and the Germans found a way to
co-exist.  It was not always peaceful or pleasant but it allowed the residents to survive.

The book is written as a series of letters between the main character and her good friend and publisher in
England.  In her letters she documents what happened during the war along with current conditions.  These
letters give one insight into the war and survival along with insight into how times of trauma can bring out the
best in people and at times the worst.  When describing this book to friends I say it feels like you are curled
up in front of a fire with a cup of hot chocolate and there is an occasional lightening strike that wakes you
from your daydream.

I do not want to give too much away.  The book is to good to go in with preconceived notions and ideas.  I
will tell you that it contains romance and secrets, recipes and heartache, strength and slight despair.  Life
itself.  As stated earlier this book is near perfection
Have a Little Faith a true story by Mitch Albom is a beautiful beautiful beautiful
book and if you are lucky enough to pick it up or have someone give you a
copy please read it.  Have a Little Faith is Albom's first non-fiction book since
Tuesday's with Morrie and it has the same qualities: humor, compassion,
humility and insight.

This book is the story of Albom's relationship with his hometown Rabbi, a
convicted felon running a church in the middle of a decaying Detroit and God.

Albom had known the Rabbi since he was a little boy. The Rabbi was a man
filled with wisdom and humor and a heart that continually searched and
guided.  A man that Albom really did not see until he was asked by the Rabbi
himself asked him to deliver his eulogy.  The convicted felon was a man Albom
met while searching for answers to the questions he had begun to ask once he
began his journey with the "Reb". A man who was involved with drugs and
guns and killing.  A man who one day called out to God and asked to be saved
and then spent the rest of his life trying to walk in the light.  God, well some will
say that God was always there.  Waiting for Albom and all to come with the
questions.  To ask the questions and begin to maybe understand that there
just might be a few answers.

This book documents Albom's journey.  How his relationship with his Rabbi
changes once he begins to see the Rabbi as a man, a man of God but first and
foremost a man like all of us.  Albom's conversations with the Rabbi make him
question his beliefs and his purpose along with awakening an amazing sense
of gratitude for all that he has received.   Albom's awakening leads him to the
church in the middle of Detroit.  A church that looks like it belongs in the middle
of a war zone but that holds the power; the power of truth and of justice and of
true redemption.

Along the way you get to meet the Rabbi's wife and the felon turned man of
god's wife.  You meet members of both congregations.  Those who have been
blessed from the beginning and those who have just recently felt the touch of
what may be God.  You learn how these lives are so different and yet on the
most primal level the same.  How all of our lives are really the same.  This
book asks questions and maybe even answers a few asked but what it does
most of all is give you hope.

Peace
